Adult Career Pathways

Adult Career Pathways is a countywide initiative to “connect the dots” between literacy, career training, and employment.  The program will strengthen pipelines to high-wage, high-growth jobs for any adult in Miami-Dade County.

To meet this critical challenge, Florida’s largest school district has joined with the state’s largest college system in a new and ambitious joint approach.  Pathway programs connect the resources of 6 district adult and technical education campuses, 6 college campuses, 19 district night school campuses, and 200 district off-campus sites.

A Pathways Blueprint, adopted by both Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami Dade College, will make basic education programs more relevant, understandable, and user-friendly to both students and employers.  Key strategies include:

  • Career planning.  To help adult students get started, the district has joined with the college to provide
standardized, 12-hour orientation courses that integrate skills assessment, career exploration, an overview of Pathways opportunities, and individual goal-setting.

  • 21st Century pathways.  Adult students will achieve basic skills in courses that emphasize 21st Century skills – work, digital, financial, health, civic, and global competencies – relevant to individual advancement and aligned to targeted employment sectors.

  • Career bridge opportunities.  As students move from basic skills into Career Technical Education and college, the district will develop an expanded array of internships, service learning, mentoring, workshops, and student work experiences leading into targeted employment sectors.

  • Cross-system coordination.  To make it easier to advance, the district and college have developed a common technology platform to exchange student portfolio information and compile Pathways resources.
