Adult General Education

Great City Schools Designation

Miami-Dade County was honored to be one of five urban areas selected to participate in the US Department of Education’s Great Cities Summit, a two-year process addressing literacy needs and the role of Adult Education in urban America.  Miami-Dade Public Schools led a local team of Great Cities partners, including:

  • Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership, Inc.
  • Miami Dade College
  • Miami-Dade Public Library System
  • Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust

Other local participants include adult education or tutoring providers; coalitions for workforce, social, or educational issues; and regional and state support organizations.

Together, the Miami-Dade Great Cities partners focused on three critical goals:

  1. Promote literacy and adult education—an essential tool and gateway for individual and regional advancement.
  2. Collaborate across systems to improve adult education.
  3. Enhance reading and literacy instruction in practical ways.

These goals are at the foundation of the district’s 5-year Adult Career Pathways plan.
