New Teacher Orientation - FAQ


 Who needs to participate in the ELITE New Teacher Orientation?

Answer: It is mandatory for all teachers who are new to teaching adults for one of M-DCPS adult centers and teaches either ABE/GED/ESOL/Citizenship. It is also mandatory for any teacher who has never attended the ELITE New Teacher Orientation and teaches either ABE/GED/ESOL/Citizenship for one of M-DCPS adult centers.

 How often is the ELITE New Teacher Orientation offered?

Answer: The ELITE New Teacher Orientation is offered one time during each trimester and at the ELITE Professional Development conference.

 How can I find out when the ELITE New Teacher Orientation will be offered?

Answer: Your principal will receive information from the district office at the beginning of the year. The information and dates will be available on the Adult Education website. A list of new teachers will be generated for the ELITE New Teacher Orientation coordinator who will then send you an email requesting you to register for the orientation.

 How long is the orientation?

Answer: The orientation is a full 8 hour day event, usually on a Saturday from 8:00am – 4:30pm

 What will I learn at the orientation?

Answer: Upon completion of the ELITE New Teacher Orientation, participants will have a general understanding of the Adult Education Programs in M-DCPS. They will learn about androgogy versus pedagogy and identify key elements in student persistence and retention, goal setting, motivation, and transition in adult education. Included in this workshop are components that will help the participants understand; the assessment tools and the process, the Florida State Curriculum Frameworks and how to construct course learning outcomes, how to develop lesson plans and a course syllabus, how to identify learning strategies that address diverse learning and intelligence styles, and how to apply these principles to meet the needs of all learners. Participants will also learn about a variety of technology tools and how to integrate them into their lesson plans. Finally, participants will become acquainted with the various support services in the school district.
