Support for Training - Support Opportunities

You may be eligible for free tuition, books, and supplies if you are unemployed, receive welfare, or meet low-income criteria.

As Florida’s leading workforce education provider, Miami-Dade County Public Schools offers a wide variety of low-cost training for adults and out-of-school youth. Most adult education classes are available for a nominal fee, including the basic literacy training needed to qualify for various industry certificates and licenses. Fees for applied technology or vocational classes are affordable and uniform for all public training providers statewide. And for many of our adult students, financial aid is available.

There are three types of assistance:

  1. One-Stop Career Center Assistance

If you are low-income or unemployed, simply go to any One Stop Career Center and apply. If you are eligible you will be able to choose an eligible training program that best fits your career goals at any of our adult, skill, or technical education centers.

  2. Federal Financial Aid

You may qualify for federal financial aid programs if you attend one of our educational centers at D.A. Dorsey, George T. Baker Aviation, The English Center, Lindsey Hopkins, Miami Lakes, and Robert Morgan.

    Resources include:

The Pell Grant, with awards ranging from $400 to $5,500 per academic year, is available to all students who enroll in certificate programs of at least 600 hours, who demonstrate financial need, and who make satisfactory progress each trimester. www.fafsa.ed.gov The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, with annual awards ranging from $200 to $2,413, is awarded to students who demonstrate significant financial need. www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/factsheets/FSAG.htm

  3. Fee Exemptions for Homeless

Some students may be exempt from tuition under Florida law. If you think you might meet the state definition of “homeless,” all you need to do is speak to a school counselor who will help you to apply for tuition waivers.
